| I did not have any association with Mr. Siu but have seen some of his paintings previously. This time I saw a lot more of his paintings. I have a lot of surprise and have an impulsion to collect some of them. As an Art History expert, I could feel Mr. Siu’s interest in Art history. Art history should not be considered as an outdated discipline. Instead, it teaches contemporary artists how to open up new possibilities with the latest development. Therefore the study of Art History is to improve the skills and standard of painting.
I have got two kinds of feeling while looking at Mr. Siu’s paintings. One is with profound nationalism and the other is with strong awareness of time. When these two characteristics are combined together, it gives me very strong impression.There were lots of plumblossom painting masters, from YanngBuzi to Wang Mian I, further to Wu Changshuo. They had their own styles of presentations. Mr. Siu is diff erent from his predecessors in the sense that traditional style of plum blossom paintings is often proud and aloof, but Mr. Siu treats them in a vigorous manner.The other point that impresses me most is his usage of red golden paper painting plum with stone, bamboo, water, moon, snow, and winter jasmine, which is very innovative. One thing deserves our attention is his long period of association with some elder painting masters, which had made his skill reaching to a much higher level. |
